The New Colossus

The next poem we will be memorizing is The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus. We have read a few books about the history of the Statue of Liberty, watched videos, looked at pictures and articles online. We have learned a lot the past few weeks. I love how much I get to learn as a mom while studying with my kids. 🙂

I made a few sheets to go with the poem.  I always like to type the poem with illustrations. It helps me and the kids get a visual cue for the poem.

I also made a sheet with just pictures. We use this one as we feel more comfortable with the words and the pictures just help us recall the poem.

The sentence strips are always a fun activity. We place them on the floor or the table and work on arranging it in the correct order. Sometimes I give it to one child and let them work independently while I work with the other child. Other times they work on it together as a team, and other times we play a racing game to see who can put it together in the shortest time. It is just fun!

Older students will enjoy checking their knowledge of the poem by filling in the blank.

We have been using this song to help us memorize the poem. It only contains the last portion of the poem put to song, but the entire poem is read during the video. We are really enjoying it! What do you think?

Hope this can be useful to your family!
